Much Ado about Nothing

Ah! I got home on Monday night and completely forgot to blog about Hero and Claudio and Beatrice as couples.

The two couples in Much Ado About Nothing vary in their attitudes about love and the way in which they fall in love.  Hero and Claudio immediately surrender to love, and it is typical movie love in the Kenneth Brannagh version we’ve been working with.  It is clear from the beginning that they have shared correspondence while Claudio was away at war, and when the two reunite there is the dramatic moment when time seems to pause while they stare at each other in wonderment.  Beatrice and Benedick start their witty arguing as soon as they see each other, and a previous relationship of some sort between the two of them is alluded to.  Although they go back and forth with insults every chance they can, it is obvious to everyone around them that the two should be in love.

It is notable, though, that Claudio immediately believes the rumors about Hero’s infidelity, and breaks their marriage plans.  I’ve always felt that his reaction was very hasty and without much trust.  However I am speaking from a 21st century viewpoint whereas a woman’s virginity was a major bargaining chip during the time of this play’s setting.  It seems that the two were immediately infatuated with one another, and then Claudio was very quickly disenchanted with her as soon as he was told the rumor.  Once Hero “is resurrected” and her reputation cleared, Claudio is once again completely enamored with her.  All in all, Hero and Claudio seem to accept their love receptively and go along with nature.

Benedick and Beatrice, however, resist nature by feigning dislike with each other.  They are both clearly intelligent and it seems to be a battle of their minds against  their hearts.  They resist nature, but still end up ensnared in love.
